Swollen feet after sitting: common reasons and safe steps
Feet and ankles can look puffy after long periods of sitting because the lower legs have had less movement. Heat, salty meals, tight clothing and individual health factors can also play a role. New, severe or one-sided swelling should not be self-managed without medical advice.
What may contribute
When the calf muscles stay still, the normal movement that supports circulation is reduced. A long drive, desk day or flight can make the lower legs feel heavier by the end of the day.
Gentle habits to consider
- Stand up and walk briefly at regular intervals.
- Move the ankles through a comfortable range of motion.
- Avoid restrictive socks or clothing around the lower leg.
- Ask a clinician before using compression products if you have a diagnosed circulation problem.
When to seek care
Seek prompt medical advice for swelling that is sudden, painful, red, warm, worsening or limited to one leg. Chest pain or shortness of breath requires urgent care. See the medical disclaimer for the site's limits.
